1.0 Programme Description

The Bachelor of Public Administration and Management is a multi-disciplinary programme. The programme seeks to equip students with multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills which are increasing becoming a highly required attribute in today’s public and private industry. It will expose the students to the key theoretical aspects of public management, foundations of governance and decentralization; the linkages between leadership and management & administration; environmental management and sustainable development among others.

It is a three year course with six semesters. It provides a pathway to professionalism in administration and management both at the national and international level. This course revolves on public administrators or managers for the public, private, corporate and NGOs domains that need such technically, ethically and psychologically qualified personnel in their organizations. The programme intends to churn out programme Directors, Local Government Administrators, Urban Planners, NGO Managers, Policy Analysts and People Oriented Managers.

2.0 Programme objectives

The public administration and management curriculum is purposely designed to provide participants with a strong theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of public administration and management nonetheless, the objectives will include:

  • To enable participants acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in public administration and management;
  • To enable participants critically analyze issues in society and devise means and practical solutions to challenges that face contemporary societies;
  • To create amongst the participants a spirit of self-motivation and direction in utilizing knowledge gotten in the delivery of both public goods and services;
  • To enable scholars become more patriotic, analytical and accountable to all clientele in the public domain.
  • To produce professional development personnel who are focused with more specific knowledge of a major development sector for better performance. Some grade of specialization will enhance skills and knowledge in a particular sector of development, thus yield focused professionals on the labour market.

3.0 Learning outcomes

  • By the end of the three years it is expected that the grandaunts of this course should be able to;
  • Exhibit knowledge in public administration theories; management practices in public and private organizations, trend in the private and public sector, policies, governance systems.
  • Demonstrate abilities design policies and programmes for effective management.
  • Exhibit basic critical thinking skills for the analysis of government programmes, organizational systems and processes.
  • Exhibit high professional standards at the workplace and on the job which include the spirit of patriotism, accountability,
  • Become positive agents of development who are able to influence national and international policies and programmes in a manner that promotes holistic and people centered development.
