On Saturday, 9th February 2019, The National Association of Nigerian Students in Uganda converged at Cavendish University in a half day workshop to brainstorm about Health Challenges affecting the world today. The theme was, “Overcoming Contemporary Public Health Challenges” and highlighted three major areas; Drug Abuse & Misuse, STDs- HIV AIDs and Nutrition.
The Objective of the workshop was to unpack the dangers of drug abuse, sexually transferable diseases and malnutrition that have claimed a big population of the youth.
The event was graced by the presence of Chief guest speakers, Prof. John Francis Mugisha the Vice Chancellor of Cavendish University Uganda, and Prof Sadiq Yusuf the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, St. Augustine University.
Other key speakers included Dr. Awunor Simeon and Mr. Abdulmujeeb Aremu.
Last week, sections of the media made false reports alluding to National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) closing private universities without a charter, of which Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) was in mention
These reports were purporting to portray the discussions of a meeting had on January 09, 2019, where several universities and other degree awarding institutions met with NCHE to discuss a number of issues to include; means of improving academic quality, various licencing regimes, with priority focus on acquisition of a Charter. The above fabrications were followed by commentary on social media on the same subject. NCHE has since come out to clarify on the discussions had during the aforementioned meeting with universities and other degree awarding institutions and gone ahead to issue a press statement clarifying that institutions holding provisional licenses will continue to exist and be assisted through an acceptable road-map to reach the highest level of accreditation which is the charter.
This is therefore to provide assurance that Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) has a valid license from NCHE to operate and award academic qualifications and will continue to offer its NCHE accredited programmes.
Three CUU students participated in the global Clinton University Conference in partnership with Ramsar Conservation of Wetlands, held at the Dubai Festival Arena, from 21st - 29th of October 2018.
Many other universities across the globe pitched their innovative ideas regarding how to alleviate poverty and unemployment in Africa, while managing the impact of climatic change.
Students Museveni Samuel and Twishim Bosco, members of "Save the World Initiative Team" presented a project on Yummy Foods where as Student Kato Isaac presented a project titled, "Girls Paint Africa Green."
The Mr. and Miss Cavendish 2019 competition was held with pomp and ceremony on 23rd November 2018. All 22 contestants put on a great show but alas, there could only be one winner in each category! At the end of the night, Richards Chimezu Kelvin Okirji, Bachelor of Telecommunication Engineering, from Nigeria and Melody Ssali, Bachelor of Journalism and Communication Studies, from Uganda emerged Mr. & Miss Cavendish respectively.

The Inter-institutional Media Challenge (IMC) is an annual media challenge for Universities/Institutes offering Journalism and Mass Communication as a major programme in Uganda. The premise of IMC is to create a platform for aspiring journalists to exhibit their skills and talents but above all to expose their talents to media houses for possible employment opportunities. The theme for this year competition was “Re-framing Coverage of Refugees in Uganda”.
Six Cavendish University Uganda students participated in the “One Minute of Fame” segment where Cavendish emerged as the Best TV Presenter, taking the 1st Runner Up position as well. Out of the seven awards for the “English News Reporting” segment, our students emerged as the Best News Anchor, Best T.V Editor and Best Technology Reporter.

On Tuesday, 9th October 2018 , as Uganda celebrated 56 years of independence, our Vice Chancellor, Prof John Mugisha was awarded The National Independence Medal. He received this medal in recognition of his immense contribution towards the public health sector in Uganda.
Also known as the Golden Jubilee Medal, this is an award given to recognise exceptional contribution of certain civilians towards Uganda’s attainment of self-rule and those who have continued to promote independence. According to the former Chairman of the National Honours and Medals Committee, Gen. Elly Tumwine, the Medal is also given " to encourage patriotism".
On this occasion, the award was also given to several deserving individuals recognized for service in the Education and Health sectors. Alongside our Vice Chancellor, Prof John Mugisha, was Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, VC of Makerere University. Other notable mentions are to Ms Nimisha Jayant Madhvani, Uganda's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates; Prof. Sam Tulya-Muhika, Uganda's Ambassador to Somalia; Ms Mumtaz Kassam, Uganda's Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom; Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, a renown specialist on wealth creation and economic transformation; Mr. Robert Benon Mugabi, Rakai District LC5 chairperson; as well as Dr Robert Sebunya, Senior Advisor to the President, among others.

On Saturday, 25th August, Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) celebrated 10 years of grooming responsible, educated, employable and entrepreneurial citizens (REEE) at the Kampala Serena Hotel. This occasion was also marked by the launch of the Alumni Association which is distinguished not only by its venerable alumni but also by being only the 4th university Alumni Association in Uganda. The theme for the day was "Cavendish University Uganda: Ten Years of Transformative Education and Graduate Success".
Among the alumni was Gen. Jok Riak Mahol of South Sudan; the State Minister for Lands in Uganda and Executive Director of the National Planning Authority and Katikiro of the Busoga Kingdom, Dr. Joseph Muvawala who graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.
To assure alumni of CUU's continued progression, current students testified of their experiences and shared the various milestones they have achieved in their various chosen fields of study. The evening was then capped off with cake and some rare dancing strokes.
On Friday, 17th August, 2018, Cavendish University Uganda had it's inaugural University Advisory Council meeting which was held at the main campus in Nsambya. The new University Advisory Council members are: Mr. Richard Byarugaba - MD, National Social Security Fund; Dr. Sam Orach Orach - Executive Secretary of the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau; Hajjat Aisha Lubega - Deputy Chairperson, Uganda Electoral Commission; Lady Justice Prof. Lilian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza - Justice of the Supreme Court; Mr. David Rusa - Alumnus and Director Special Duties, Office of the President; Mr. Onapito Ekomoloit - Director Legal and Corporate Affairs, Nile Breweries. As part of their inaugural meeting, Members got to tour some of the Campus facilities and interact with some CUU students who have distinguished themselves in their Faculties.
On Monday, 28th May, the outgoing Guild cabinet led by President Mading Beny Til, handed over the instruments of office to the incoming Guild President, Israel Lambe Zimanga at a colourful ceremony organized by the Ag. Dean of Students, Ms. Hope Byachi. The occasion was graced by the university Academic Registrar, Mr. Olal Odur who shared words of wisdom with those present. Also present were the Director, Sales and Marketing, Mr. Frederick Mufta and the Ag. Human Resource Manager, Mr. Jackson Birungi.

The 9th Graduation Ceremony of Cavendish University Uganda was held on Friday, April 20th, 2018 at the Commonwealth Speke Resort, Munyonyo. Over 1000 students graduated from the Faculties of Law, Socio-Economic Sciences, Science and Technology and the School of Postgraduate Studies.
The day was filled with pomp and ceremony, starting with the procession that was led by the University Chancellor; H.E. Benjamin W. Mkapa, former president of the People's Republic of Tanzania; and interspersed with various local dances. The theme for the day, University Education as a Tool for the Transformation of Society, was expounded in various forms by the guest of honour, Hon. Betty Kamya, Minister for Kampala; the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John F. Mugisha and the Chairman, University Council, Prof. Olubayi Olubayi.
For their part, students excitedly took pictures, clapped for themselves and their colleagues and danced as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

Cavendish University Uganda was privileged to host M/s Mercy Kainobwisho, the Director Intellectual Property - URSB (LLM, MBA, LLB(Hons); who made a very interesting and academically intriguing presentation on *"Building a competitive business in a dynamic environment"* to our pioneer *Working Adults Programme* Business class.
On Saturday, 14th April, the first ever Cavendish University Cultural Gala was held. It was an afternoon of incredible performances, immense culture, music , food and energy from the 13 Nationalities that participated. The collaborations and synergies were worth everything. Students raised their nations' flags high as one and all joined in celebrating the uniqueness of their particular country of birth.
This year's finalists raised the bar quite high and wowed the audience with their concepts. Choosing a winner was a difficult task – with the top three contenders coming within just a point of each other – but in the end, Burundi took the crown.
The CUU Guild together with the reigning Miss Cavendish on Saturday 31st March 2018, visited Nsambya Babies home and donated goodies worth millions to the home. In line with the Cavendish Mission of educating and developing responsible citizens, the event was well received and applauded by the Catholic community speared by the Child Welfare and Adoption Society - a Christian non-government organization that advocates for children and promotes the care of vulnerable ones to grow into responsible adults.
The event was part of the CUU Guild Easter Community outreach engagement under the leadership of both the Guild Vice President - Tan and Miss Cavendish 2017. A number of students participated and requested that this becomes an annual event on the CUU community outreach calendar.
The next CUU Guild Community engagement shall be at the end of this month and will involve a cleaning exercise within the Kamwanyi community village. This shall be a joint engagement with KCCA , the village leadership and the area Member of Parliament.

Museveni Samuel, Kobusingye Ritah and Twishime Bosco of Save The World Initiative Team from Cavendish University Uganda pitched their innovative business idea in the first ever international global Hultprize Nairobi regional competition at brook house school on the 9th and 10th of March 2018 in Kenya. The team competed with Universities from USA, Canada, UK, India, Netherlands, South Africa, Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya, Burundi, Nigeria, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Save the world initiative team will therefore proceed to UK for the Final accelerator to be held in September 2018.

Cavendish University Uganda advances to regional finals of the 8th annual Hult Prize in response to the 2018 Challenge: "Harnessing the Power of Energy to transform the lives of 10 million people".
The Hult Prize has recently announced the representing teams from Cavendish University Uganda that have advanced to the 8th annual regional finals of the competition.
The Hult Prize is a crowd sourcing platform for social good, named as one of the top five ideas changing the world by TIME Magazine. The innovative crowd sourcing platform identifies and launches disruptive and catalytic social ventures that aim to solve the planet’s most pressing challenges. This year, the Hult Prize is focused around finding solutions for the millions of people around the world through harnessing the power of energy.

The team competed in the Hult Prize at Cavendish University event on 2nd December, 2017 in the 1st round and moved to round 2 where they came out victorious. They built a solution to this year’s challenge "Harnessing The Power of Energy to Transform The Lives of 10 million People" by 2025.
The team will now move on to compete at the Hult Prize regional finals in March 2018, which is being hosted in 16 cities around the world. The campus director said "everything you want is on the other side of fear, so take the iniatives and learn from every outcome", and here our teams have really taken the initiative and they have progressed forward. – Abasiama Uduak. Ahmad Ashkar, CEO and founder of the Hult Prize attributes the success of the competition to the global youth revolution. Shyaka Lwanyaaga, the BPH student who won the AIME Golden Ticket membership. AIME's goal is to bridge the gap between low income and high income high school students by providing mentoring services to them in the hope that these young persons will gain a university education, just like their wealthier counterparts. On October 28th, all roads let to the upscale Theater La Bonita, Kampala where the University held the Miss Cavendish University 2017 competition. The audience witnessed stiff competition between 12 finalists who were judged on both beauty and brains, with Ms. Peniella Kazemwami, a Bachelor of Business Management student, taking the crown. The event, which was graced by students, faculty, admin, parents and well-wishers. In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Mugisha emphasized the importance of culture, beauty and academics.
On Sunday August 27th, members of the Cavendish family led by Daphine Tukahebwa, the Enrolment Manager, joined in on a great cause: a marathon dubbed “Cancer Run 2017” to benefit the Cancer Unit at Nsambya Hospital. The Run which was organized by Rotary Club, Uganda raised funds to complete the building of a bunker for the linear moderator machine. Participants were flagged off at the Kololo Independence Grounds.
Over 700 students from high schools across the country flocked Cavendish University Uganda grounds for the open day on 29th July 2017. Our very own Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Mugisha was recently awarded a Fellowship of African Institute of Public Health Professionals at the just concluded conference on July 15th in Abuja, Nigeria. A number of Cavendish University Uganda alumni travelled long distances to support the Vice Chancellor who was pleasantly surprised at this kind gesture. The African Institute of Public Health Professionals is an internationally recognized institute whose membership is open to all Public Health Professionals in Africa. The Institute was established to assist areas in Africa that have a history of disease and environmental problems thereby creating a healthy environment that’s conducive for living. The Institute also aims to build a strong network of seasoned professionals and strengthen their capacity through, research, training, symposia, etc
Over a thousand students graduated on March 10th from Cavendish University Uganda. The graduation ceremony, which attracted a large audience, was presided over by the Chancellor of the University, former president of Tanzania, His Excellency William Benjamin Mkapa. We have always said that your journey to success begins at Cavendish University Uganda. However, that journey does not end here. Dr. Olive Sabiti, our Dean of Law, is in charge of a prestigious international scholarship programme for higher education.
The programme is known as the Equity and Merit Scholarships for Manchester University, and many students have benefitted from it.These graduates have gone on to run world-changing initiatives, and to hold powerful positions in both the public and private sector.
According to Joanne Jacobs, the current head of the scholarship program, the University waives the tuition fee in full and the generosity of alumni and NGO’s covers students' living costs and flights to the UK.
“The scholarship aims to assist talented but economically disadvantaged students from some of the world’s poorest countries to attain an education in fields which they would otherwise not be able to afford,” she said.
The scheme operates in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Bangladesh and scholarships are available for students to undertake postgraduate Masters Degrees that are not available in their home country and which are intended to fill a particular skills gap.
Dr. Olive attended the 10-Year Celebration of the Scholarship Programme and interacted with graduates and officials.
In a bid to equip students with more knowledge-based experience and practical skills in legal matters, the Uganda Law Society, in partnership with Cavendish University Uganda, has inaugurated a Rule of Law club that will ensure students are learned, well trained professionals that will address the problems faced in society.
This Club uses a participatory approach that ensures governance and the rule of law prevail in Uganda by allowing students of the legal fraternity and members of different communities to interact and share prevailing legal issues.
The Rule of Law Club was officially launched at the Faculty Hall in Kampala on Friday 2nd June by the president of the Uganda Law Society, Francis Gimara who was accompanied by other delegates and University officials at the Faculty Hall in Kampala.
In his address, Gimara said that embracing this initiative in universities is a revolution in realizing good governance, accountability and human rights in society. He said that this movement has to be championed by the youth because they are in a better position to access and influence more young citizens in transforming this country into a nation that respects the rule of law.
“As young students, don’t rely so much on the current and aged law practitioners who lack national spirit but instead start clubs that will educate more people into understanding and interpreting laws as a path to creation of a stable country through the culture of respect of the rule of law, respect for processes and respect for institutions”, he said.
Citing some countries that have benefited from the rule of law, Gimara said that the United Kingdom and United States of America have prospered through the creation of institutions that have protected their constitutional laws therefore his hope is that through the formation of such clubs Uganda will emulate these countries.
He applauded the students of Cavendish University Uganda for their enthusiasm and passion to acquire more knowledge in the legal profession, urging them to be disciples of the rule of law and to work for the good of the nation. The President was pleased by the University`s cosmopolitan student community which he promised would greatly benefit from this Initiative which will make them ambassadors of hope in their respective countries as far as the rule of law is concerned.
The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Olive Sabiiti said that the Rule of Law Club is an initiative of the Uganda Law Society that models law students into relevant legal practitioners in line with Cavendish University Uganda`s practical approach to teaching. She described this initiative as a fertile seed sown by Uganda Law Society which she hopes will spread throughout the entire University for all students to benefit and contribute to nation building.
The head of the Uganda Society Rule of Law concept, Irene Kwaga in turn said that this Club is a non-partisan, non-governmental forum dedicated towards promoting a free society by ensuring there is dignity, social justice, democracy, equality and human rights of all persons in observing and respecting laws that govern them. She urged Cavendish University Uganda to create an outreach clinic similar to that of Makerere University that will enable law students to interact with the community around them.
Besides launching the Club, the well-attended ceremony was highly interactive; with questions and comments from excited students who embraced this Initiative and promised to make good use of it.
Cavendish University Uganda continues to invest in its future and in that of its students and alumni. This time, the University is proud to announce the appointment of its new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Mugisha, a Ugandan national with international experience and fresh,innovative ideas to continue strengthening academics and to provide Uganda with one of its most modern universities.
Prof. Mugisha has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic & Student Affairs at Cavendish University Uganda since joining last August from Uganda Martyrs University. He holds a PhD in Health Planning and Management from Keele University in England and is a graduate of Makerere University. He has researched and published extensively and has a proven track record in research, teaching, curricula development, academic leadership and institutional governance matters. Prof. Mugisha is ideally suited to continue the transformation of Cavendish University Uganda as it enters a new development phase: “I am honored by this appointment and privileged to continue building on the successes of my predecessor as we strive to provide access to high quality and market-relevant higher education to all our students.”
According to Prof. Koi, “It is extremely difficult to leave Cavendish University Uganda at this time and I will miss the students and staff.” Prof. Mugisha added, “Together we have renovated the current facilities and moved to new ones that are of world-class standards. I will ensure that we fulfill the mission of our university which is to produce responsible, educated, employable and entrepreneurial citizens.”
When asked to comment, the Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. O. Olubayi said: “Prof.Mugisha has the necessary leadership experience, knowledge and skills that will enable him to continue the process of transforming Cavendish University Uganda into a great institution of higher learning. The Council has full confidence in his transformational leadership.” Professor Olubayi also praised Prof. Koi for her contribution to the University and offered her best wishes as she returns to Kenya. “We are very grateful to Prof. Koi Tirima for her inspiring leadership of our University during the past 16 months, and very happy to have her remain on the University Council.”
Cavendish University Uganda remains committed to establishing the University firmly in the academic marketplace by investing in refreshing strategic initiatives to improve the quality an ddelivery of its educational services.
